Tributes Pour in for M. F. Husain

The death of India’s most famous modern artist, M.F. Husain, in a London hospital early Thursday has prompted an outpouring of grief from across the country. Labeled as the "Picasso of India" by Forbes magazine, the 95-year-old maverick earned fame and wrath for his works.

Television news channels and social media networks are abuzz with news of his passing. Below are some of the tributes paid to the legendary painter.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described Mr. Husain’s death as a "national loss."

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil: “He was a world renowned artist whose extraordinary style made him a celebrity in his own right in the arena of contemporary paintings. His death would create a deep void in the world of art and creativity. He also brought glory to the house as a Parliamentarian.”

Vice President M Hamid Ansari: “Besides his enormous achievements in painting and other art forms, M.F. Husain was a keen observer of our national evolution which was reflected in his art. He will always be remembered for his love of India that was reflected in his paintings”

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar: “His death leaves behind a vacuum.”
